Permanent hair reduction is a professional treatment that uses light-based technology to safely and effectively reduce unwanted hair. It works by targeting the hair follicles during their active growth phase, which gradually leads to softer, finer, and less visible regrowth over time.

Hair grows in cycles, and only hairs in the active growth (anagen) phase can be effectively treated. On average, 8–12 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart are recommended to achieve the best results. The exact number of sessions depends on your hair type, skin tone, the area being treated, and hormonal factors.

At Althea, we use advanced IPL technology, including IPL, SHR and Dual Mode settings, to deliver safe, effective, and comfortable permanent hair reduction. While laser hair removal uses a single concentrated wavelength, IPL uses broad-spectrum light, which allows us to treat a wider range of skin tones and hair types more gently.

One of the biggest differences is comfort — IPL, especially with SHR (Super Hair Removal), gradually heats the hair follicle instead of delivering one strong zap like traditional lasers. This means treatments feel much more comfortable and are better suited to sensitive areas and skin types.

Yes! Shaving is required 24 hours before your treatment, and it's perfectly fine to shave between sessions. However, waxing, plucking, or using hair removal creams should be avoided, as they remove the follicle that we need to target with the light.

We’ll provide you with a full pre- and post-treatment care guide. In general:

Before treatment:

• Shave the area 24 hours prior

• Avoid sun exposure, fake tan, and active skincare on the area for 2 weeks

• Exfoliate the area 2-3 days prior

After treatment:

• Keep the area cool and moisturised

• Avoid heat (hot showers, saunas, intense exercise) for 24–48 hours

• Wear SPF daily on exposed areas

You can expect a significant and long-term reduction in hair growth. While some fine or light regrowth may occur due to hormonal changes or genetics, maintenance sessions once or twice a year are typically enough to keep your skin smooth and hair-free.
